For centuries, gemstones have played an important role in people's daily life. Today, birthstones are used to represent the month of birth individuals. Some believe that the Birthstones have special powers to the user. Others simply appreciate carry a gemstone that represents the month of birth.
When these gemstones first associated with the months of the year? Historians believe the first written record comes from the book of Exodus in the Old Testament of the Bible. The following describes the breastplate of the high priest of the Hebrews as having 12 specific gems, one for each of the 12 tribes of Israel:
"Then mounted four rows of precious stones in it. In the first row was a ruby, topaz, and beryl, in the second row is turquoise, a sapphire and emerald, the third row, a hyacinth, an agate and an amethyst; in the fourth row a beryl, an onyx and a jasper. They were mounted in gold filigree settings. There were twelve stones, one for each of the names of the children of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the twelve tribes. "(Exodus, Chapter 39:9-14, New Version International)
During the 8th and 9th centuries, gemstones were also connected to the 12 apostles. Since then, the 12 stones have been related with month of birth and zodiac signs. The current use of birth stones probably originated in Poland in the 15th or 16th century. Many believed that the powers of a gemstone of a given month was higher in that month. Therefore, people may have used the stone for each month, hoping to achieve all the effects of gemstones.
It was not until 1912 that the jewelers of America organized an official list connecting each month with a specific stone. Have been added or changed according to the list it was more commercially viable, and not necessarily what is traditionally considered the right stone for that particular month. This list is still used today to identify stones in particular. As a result, some argue that the correct way to assign gemstones is according to astrological sign and not months. For this reason, some older lists vary from a gem stone modern today as the following list shows.

Pearls are a classic choice, while genuine Alexandrite - a color change stone, is expensive and rare. In response to the costs associated with alexandrite, some manufacturers have selected their own stone to represent the month of June, including Green Tourmaline to represent the color green alexandrite, garnet, its color change, and Smokey quartz or pink tourmaline.
When choosing a birthstone, keep in mind that the four Cs of purchase Diamond apply to colored gemstones, like this: carat, cut, color and clarity. Birthstone Gems and graduate rates for all four qualities, as well as place of origin, availability / rarity, possible treatments and current fashion. It is not unusual for a particular gemstone suddenly increase in value because they are currently fashionable use. Also, the type of gemstone selected dictates the care they need. Some genuine stones have excellent durability, while others require more care. For example, rubies and sapphires are considered a good choice for everyday wear, while an opal or pearl require careful handling.
